UK Coaching Associations Work Together

Four of the leading UK Coaching Bodies created a “Statement of Shared Professional Values” at a round-table meeting in February.

Why is this important?

There are a number of coaching associations and bodies around the world, each with it’s own purpose, mission, values and standards.  In order to come together as a profession, it makes sense to have some shared standards and values vs dozens of similar yet different ones.  As is stated on the press release (link is below), one of the aims of the round-table is:  “to co-operate to enhance the reputation of the coaching industry.”  Shared values etc. does just that.

The four coaching associations who participated were:

  • The Association for Coaching (AC)
  • Association of Professional Executive Coaching and Supervision (APECS),
  • European Mentoring and Coaching Council – UK (EMCC-UK), and
  • the International Coach Federation in the UK (ICF-UK)

Before You Become a Coach….

Before you can become a life coach, you need to know what coaching is and where it comes from.

If you’ve looked at various sites on personal or life coaching, you’ve probably noticed that their definitions of coaching vary.  There isn’t a standard definition.

Life Coaching for Scottish Prisoners

Life coaching was offered to prisoners in Scotland in an effort to support them to integrate back into the community and not re-offend.  As you can imagine, if you release a person back into the same environment that landed them in jail, chances are they will end up in jail again.

Initially the results have shown that the percentage of prisoners who get jobs when they are released is 21% in the group that had coaches and less than half of that for released prisoners without them.  The whole aim is to reduce the rate of re-offending, though those statistics are not yet available.
